Day 1 - Arrival

One of Omaha’s most storied steakhouses is Gorat’s, where billionaire Warren Buffett orders a 22 oz. Omaha T-bone with two sides of crispy hash browns, and a Coca-Cola. On your way out, leave your mark with a peg on their world map.

Breakfast at Harold’s

Omaha’s historic Florence neighborhood boasts more historical markers per one square mile than anywhere else in Nebraska. While there, enjoy classic eats at Harold’s Koffee House, an established diner outfitted in booths and stools in that retro ‘50s teal hue.

Visit Malcolm X’s Birth Site 

Civil Rights leader Malcolm X was born in Omaha in 1925 and 17 acres near his birth site include a visitor center, community garden, greenhouse, plaza, and historical marker.

Step Back in Time at The Durham Museum

Omaha’s former Union Station, a National Historic Landmark, is filled with a vast array of permanent exhibits highlighting the region’s history and a broad range of traveling exhibitions. Don’t miss the Byron Reed Collection, consisting of nearly 10,000 coins, banknotes, documents, books and maps compiled by a local real estate agent in the late 19th century. For an indulgent snack, hit up the Durham’s old-fashioned soda fountain.

Head to historic South Omaha and visit the Midwest’s first Latino art and history museum El Museo Latino, an intimate art and cultural gallery.

South Omaha offers a glimpse of a variety of cultures at every turn. Spots with great food and drinks and weekend mariachi groups include Howard’s Charro (Tex-Mex style food) and Isla de Mar (seafood-heavy menu).

Shirley’s Diner’s first iteration was featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The nostalgic ‘50s décor lives on and its menu still offers hefty helpings of comfort food favorites like chicken fried steak and buttermilk pancakes

Smithsonian affiliate Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum is home to the nation’s largest collection of Cold War aircraft and artifacts.

Head to Boys Town

World-famous Boys Town, a National Historic Landmark District, is home to chapels, statues and gardens, the Hall of History museum, founder Father Flanagan’s House, and the visitors center – home to the World’s Largest Ball of Stamps.

Dinker’s has been a burger-slingin’ Omaha tradition for 60 years. Try the popular Haystack: a patty topped with American cheese, honey smoked ham and a fried egg.
